We’ll rise early for a private pick-up from your hotel in Quito, heading straight to the spectacular Cotopaxi National Park. Home to one of the highest active volcanoes in the world (5,897m), this unique alpine sanctuary is perfect for spotting wild horses, paramo wolves, and Andean birds. We’ll acclimate at the local Interpretation Center before enjoying a scenic walk along the beautiful Limpiopungo Lagoon.
Then, the real adventure begins as we hike up the volcanic trail to the famous José Rivas Refuge at 4,864 meters, right beneath the majestic glaciers. After celebrating our achievement with a rewarding Box Lunch and panoramic mountain views, we’ll descend to our private vehicle and hit the road to Baños de Agua Santa, catching stunning glimpses of the Chimborazo and Tungurahua volcanoes before dropping you off at your hotel. The first chapter of your unforgettable private full-day volcano adventure begins at 08:30 AM with a direct pick-up from your accommodation. Whether we start from Quito or Baños, we will hit the road for a scenic 2.5-hour drive along the legendary Avenue of the Volcanoes toward the park entrance. With a favorable climate and clear blue skies, the majestic, snow-capped silhouettes of the Illinizas, Cotopaxi, and Tungurahua will escort us along the highway, offering breathtaking panoramic views before we even step foot on the mountain. Upon reaching the park entrance, we’ll register and head straight to the Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Center, sitting at 3,600 meters above sea level. This isn’t just a quick stop; it’s the perfect chapter to safely acclimate your body to the high altitude while enjoying the mountain air. Together, we’ll explore the history of the mighty Cotopaxi volcano, learning about its geographical data, colossal eruptions, and discovering the unique plants and animals that manage to survive in this extreme alpine wilderness. It is a perfect way to prepare your mind and body for the heights ahead, don’t you think?
Next, we’ll make our way to the breathtaking Limpiopungo Lagoon for a scenic walk along its shores. Keep your eyes wide open, as this high-altitude sanctuary is home to incredible wildlife; you might spot a wild paramo wolf pacing through the brush, the sacred curiquingue bird soaring above, or the iconic chuquiragua flower blooming in the cold. Then, the ultimate alpine challenge of the day begins! We’ll head up the volcano to hike toward the famous José Rivas Refuge (optional 1.5-hour trek), sitting at a staggering 4,864 meters above sea level. Walking along these extensive paramo formations right beneath the massive peaks will truly take your breath away—literally! To celebrate conquering the heights, we’ll pause right at the refuge to enjoy a well-deserved Box Lunch surrounded by some of the most dramatic volcanic landscapes on Earth.
Once we’ve conquered the heights of the volcano, we’ll head back to our comfortable private vehicle to begin our journey toward the vibrant city of Baños de Agua Santa. The drive itself is a beautiful spectacle; if the Andean weather behaves, you’ll catch jaw-dropping views of the colossal Chimborazo and the active Tungurahua volcano framing the horizon. Upon arriving in town, we’ll drop you off safely directly at your hotel or right at our local office within the city center. It’s the absolute best way to maximize your travel time and transition from the high Andes straight into the gateway of the Amazon.

After completing our volcano adventure, the transition to your final drop-off hotel in Baños de Agua Santa takes around 3 hours.
