Just a short ride from town, take a quick detour to explore the beautiful Ulba and El Silencio waterfalls. Important Safety Tip: Since these are natural, open trails, please make sure your bicycle stays right by your side and never leave it out of your sight while taking photos.
Get back to the main route and stop at this spectacular open-air viewpoint overlooking the Agoyan waterfall. If you visit during the rainy season, you will get to witness the pure power and unmatched grandeur of the roaring Pastaza River at its peak. Don’t forget your camera before crossing the upcoming rock tunnels!
Pedal further down the canyon and marvel at the spectacular Manto de la Novia cascade splitting the green cliffs. This is the perfect spot to park your bike for a moment and hop on the famous traditional Tarabita (cable car) to fly high across the deep Pastaza River canyon.
Arrive at Río Verde and secure your bike with our heavy-duty lock. There are two different trails to experience this colossal waterfall, each with its own vibe:
The Long Route (Traditional Entrance): A scenic 25-minute hike through lush hanging bridges. It takes you right behind the water curtain and up to the famous «crack» (grieta) where you must crawl to reach the top balcony. Very adventurous and gets you completely soaked.
The Short Route (New Entrance / Island): A quick 10-minute walk down steep steps. It leads you directly to the spectacular suspension bridge right in front of the waterfall for the most iconic panoramic photos with less walking.
Pedal just 3 km past Río Verde to reach this stunning waterfall. While the natural pool is no longer suitable for swimming, you can still descend carefully to the base to cool off, wash away the sweat, and enjoy a refreshing splash in a wild, pristine setting before heading back.
Zero uphill pedaling required! Once you finish your adventure, you have two super easy options to catch a local transport truck (camioneta) back to town:
From Machay: You can flag down a passing truck or public bus right on the main road outside the waterfall entrance.
From Río Verde: If you prefer, pedal back just 3 km to the main parking lot of the Pailón del Diablo entrance, where trucks are always parked and waiting to load bikes and passengers all day long. Simply load your bike and enjoy a comfortable, effortless ride straight back to our Wonderful Ecuador office.
The Waterfalls Route is a spectacular 20 km ride through changing environments. Since you’ll be cycling, walking, and getting close to massive waterfalls, we highly recommend bringing:
Weather-Flexible Clothing: Pack lightweight clothes for warm weather, but always bring a rain jacket or poncho (Baños weather loves surprises!).
Comfortable Shoes: Good sneakers or hiking shoes for walking down to the waterfalls.
Sun & Bug Protection: Sunscreen and a reliable mosquito repellent are must-haves for the canyon.
Swimwear & Towel: Ideal if you want to take a refreshing splash and cool off at the base of Machay waterfall.
Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your 20 km journey.
Camera or Smartphone: Fully charged to capture the epic landscapes, tunnels, and waterfall
es, absolutely! The Waterfalls Route is mostly downhill and follows a well-signed paved road, making it perfect for all fitness levels. Just remember to ride carefully on the right side of the road and keep your bike within arm’s reach at open spots like Ulba.
Don’t stress at all! The freedom is yours. If you want to cut the ride short, you can easily flag down any of the local transport trucks (camionetas) or public buses passing along the main road all day long. They will happily load your bike and bring you back to Baños for about $3.
